In the fall, all the animals are gathered and led to the corral. The animals are led down a corridor and into a squeeze chute where the animal is immobilized and its weight is noted. Parasite control is facilitated by the maintenance of the pastures. Rotational grazing pastures also allow the use of a pasture harrow on the whole surface of the pasture once the animals are transferred to a new pasture. This also allows optimal feeding of the herd and limits the proliferation of flies and parasites in animal droppings. Heifers and uncastrated males will be tattooed and registered with the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation |
When the herd is gathered in the fall the heifer and the male calves will be separated from their mother for weaning. At the end of weaning, the young males will join the other males in the finishing pastures & pens. The sires will also be separated from their respective herds and will join the young non-castrated steers. The heifers will be sent to a temporary pen to resume weaning. At the end of this period, a few heifers will be sent to other breeding farms, others will be prepared for the auction season and the rest will go with the cows to the winter pasture.
