Feeding, breeding conditions and quality care are a priority for the Borealis farm. The requirements associated with the certification of Borealis as a organic certified Farm by Garantie Bio-Ecocert and the requirements associated to the PATBQ (Programme d'Amélioration des Troupeaux de Bovins du Québec) program complement the administration's specifications already in place and whose objective is to oversee production practices in order to maintain and improve quality. The animals are exclusively grass fed on pasture and forage from our land during winter time. The Borealis farm does not use growth hormones, steroïds, nor does add drugs, or whatever supplements to the forage. The Highland will receive no feed containing animal by-products (including marine animals) nor will it contain any protein supplements from a derived source. Will also be excluded from the feed grains (ex: corn, wheat, barley etc.), oleaginous plants or oleaginous cattle-cake. The seeds used to regenerate the fields are non-genetically modified (non GMO). The animals will not be fed with genetically modified plants (GMOs). Pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer (chimical) are not used on Borealis lands and rented ones. |
Births
occur in the pastures and do not require assistance. The calves are weighed
at birth and identified by a numbered tag in placed on their ear. The
young calf will also be vaccinated and will receive a dose of selenium
(due to the lack of selenium in the soil in Eastern Canada). Furthermore
most male calves will be castrated at birth (by the installation of an
elastic).
