Three distinct males were used as breeders on the Borealis farm. Two of these males are still active today! These breeders, coming from different herds, have the optimal desired genetic characteristics. These bulls come from the following farms:

Maple Lea Callum M Llewellyn; born April 23, 1993 (Quebec); colour: white; tattoo ML12C. Sire: Gof Willy White, dam: Trafalgar Ulrico.

Au Petit Bercail Génie 2G; born May 1st, 1997 (Quebec); colour: red; tattoo APB2G. Sire: Beethoven of Lyon Pride, dam: APB dentelle. (This bull had the best weight gain of the l'Annonciation test station in 1998).

Potvin Boulanger Hélios de la Tartigou; born September 19, 1998 (Quebec); colour: black; tattoo FBP6H. Sire: CDC Yang, dam: Delisle Jessy.

The reproduction herd is comprised of about forty cows. These females come from distinct lines, thus assuring a good genetic representativeness.

Breeding occurs from the end of July until mid-October. At the end of this period, the bulls and the young males are separated from the gestating cows to spend winter and the beginning of spring in a designated winter pen. As for the cows, they will be confined to a distinct winter pasture. This is where the births will take place starting at the end of April until mid-July. When the cows return to the summer pastures, the bulls will soon join them, each cow dedicated to one of bulls.

The weaning of the calves will follow the gathering and the sorting of the young calves during the fall.

Following the weaning, producers who took option on certain heifers during the summer will take delivery. The other heifers will join the other cows for the long winter months.

Once the weaning period is completed, the young bulls will be directed to a special pen reserved for the males where they will be fed forage produced on the farm. Certain males, presenting characteristics and conformation qualities or daily weight gain above average will be identified and may make an excellent choice as breeders. Certain bulls may even go to a test station to confirm or refute their quality as breeders. If these characteristics are maintained for a certain period of time, they will be submitted to tests that will determine with certainty the capacity and the quality of their semen. This will finally allow us to offer them on the reproduction market.
