Following the gathering and the sorting of the bison at the beginning of fall the calves are then weaned. After the weaning, breeders who took options on certain bison cows during the year will take delivery. The other cows will be sent to different specialized auctions attended by breeders from Eastern Canada, Western Canada and the United States. Once the weaning period is completed, the young males will be directed to a special park where they will be exclusively fed forage produced on the farm. Certain males, presenting characteristics and conformation qualities or daily weight gains above standards, will be identified and may make an excellent choice as breeders. If these characteristics are maintained for a certain period of time, they will then be submitted to a test that will determine with certainty their capacity and the quality of their semen. This will allow us to offer them on the reproduction market, similar to the procedure existing in beef cattle test stations.
